Joe McBride on Chinese Landscape Paintings in Berkeley Eye

Gallery Talk

Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Landscape Architecture and Forestry at UC Berkeley, Joe McBride addresses two Chinese landscape paintings: Hu Gongshu’s Chrysanthemums, Old Tree, Rock (1879) and Xie Cheng’s seventeenth-century Landscape, paying special attention to the imagery of trees.

Among the many courses McBride has taught are those that have brought together his expertise in landscape architecture and forestry with his interest in visual art—for example, The American Forest, cotaught with Professor Margaretta Lovell in the History of Art Department. As a visiting professor in China, McBride traveled extensively to study various landscape regions, with a special eye to indigenous Chinese trees.
